  • Common Mistakes: Measuring inside recess for face fit installs or ignoring floor fall.
  • Configuration Notes: Allow for cassette type and fit location (face fit vs reveal).

How It Is Installed

  • Preparation: Verify substrate, confirm fixing points, ensure access.
  • Sequence:
    • Mark and drill mounting points.
    • Fix headbox and side channels.
    • Install roller assembly and bottom bar.
    • Tension and align fabric.
    • Test operation and limits.

  • NCC Classification: Zipscreen is an external attachment, not part of the external wall system.
  • Class 2 & 3 Building Compliance: For Type A/B construction, external walls must be non-combustible (NCC Vol 1 Clause C2D10). As an attachment, Zipscreen may be used if it does not reduce wall fire performance.
  • Material Compliance:
    • Aluminium components are non-combustible under AS 1530.1.
    • Fabrics/PVC may be combustible but must meet low-flame-spread or fire-retardant ratings (AS 1530.2 or AS 1530.3).
    • Fire-retardant mesh/canvas recommended for Class 2/3 applications.
  • Performance Requirement: Must meet NCC CP2 – preventing fire spread between buildings/storeys.
  • Installer / Specifier Responsibilities: Confirm classification, maintain wall integrity, and provide compliance documentation.
  • Referenced Standards:
    • AS 1530.1, AS 1530.2, AS 1530.3.
    • NCC Vol 1 Part C2D10 and Performance Requirement CP2.

Summary:

Outdoor entertaining is part of Brisbane’s lifestyle, and choosing the right outdoor blind can make all the difference. Both Zipscreen and Ziptrak are premium track-guided systems designed to protect your outdoor area from wind, rain, and harsh sunlight.
ONESOLOMON has supplied both systems in the past but now exclusively recommends and installs Zipscreen, after finding it delivers the best balance of technology, aesthetics, and long-term performance for our customers.

Zipscreen vs Ziptrak – Understanding the Technology Behind the Finish

Zipscreen’s engineering advantage lies in its Z-Lock™ technology and the design of its roller system, which together create a sleeker, flatter appearance.

Concealed Fabric Retention

Unlike Ziptrak, which uses a visible Kedar cord welded to the fabric, Zipscreen’s zip is completely hidden within the aluminium side channels.

This means there are no visible edges or fabric joins, giving the blind a clean, architectural finish from both inside and outside.

Because the zip is enclosed, it also doesn’t fade or discolour over time, ensuring a longer-lasting appearance.

Innovative Roller Tube Design

When blinds roll up, the area where the zip (or Kedar) attaches to the fabric becomes slightly thicker, often causing ripples or diamond-shaped impressions near the sides of the blind.

To overcome this, Zipscreen uses a funnel-shaped groove along the roller tube. This creates space for the zip to sit “in midair” as it wraps around the tube, preventing the fabric from bulking up unevenly.

The result is a straighter roll, a flatter hang, and a more uniform appearance when the blind is partially down.

Smooth, Balanced Operation

Both systems use spring-assisted mechanisms that allow the blind to stay in position when released, but Zipscreen’s zip-based guide and lighter fabric tension make manual or motorised operation exceptionally smooth.

While no outdoor blind will ever appear as perfectly flat as a sheet of glass, Zipscreen’s precision design ensures a visibly smoother and more consistent finish across all operating positions.

Why Zipscreen Delivers a Smoother Finish

Fabric Retention

  • Ziptrak: Uses a welded Kedar cord sewn into the fabric. It allows tight tensioning and works well in windy conditions, but the visible edge can limit colour-matching and requires regular cleaning.
  • Zipscreen: Uses a Z-Lock zip system that conceals the fabric edge within the channel for a seamless look. It provides smoother movement and a modern aesthetic, though installation accuracy is key to performance under wind load.

Hold-Down Options

  • Ziptrak: Offers centre release and channel lock systems operable from inside or outside.
  • Zipscreen: Uses either a simple slide bolt or ultra lock systmen that suits most installations.

Headbox & Aesthetics

  • Ziptrak: The Ziptrak Headbox, while functional, offers a more traditional look and is ideal for customers seeking simplicity.
  • Zipscreen: Sleek, fully enclosed aluminium headbox that protects fabric, reduces insects, and blends beautifully with modern architecture — ideal for coastal or contemporary homes.
  • Aesthetics are always a matter of personal opinion however we often find customers prefer the look of the Zipscreen top box cassette and the more sleek side channel design.

Price

Both systems are similarly priced. However, its superior aesthetics and smoother function give Zipscreen the advantage in long-term value.

Why ONESOLOMON Chooses Zipscreen

After extensive testing and years of installation experience, ONESOLOMON found Zipscreen to be:
The most visually refined outdoor blind available

  • Better protected against UV and weathering
  • Technically superior in roller design and componentry
  • Smoother to operate and easier to maintain

For these reasons, we now manufacture and install Zipscreen exclusively — the system we believe best represents our commitment to quality, design, and customer satisfaction.

Considering Other Brands?

Many competing systems — such as Slidetrack, EZip, or SmartTrack — imitate the appearance of track-guided blinds but lack the precision-engineered retention and roller systems found in Zipscreen.
These alternatives often:

  • Use visible fabric edges or external fixings
  • Are constructed from inferior materials resulting in clunkier operation
  • Struggle with fabric rippling over time
  • Offer limited compatibility with motorisation or modern aesthetics

At ONESOLOMON, we’ve tested them all — and consistently return to Zipscreen as the most reliable, best-looking, and longest-lasting solution for Brisbane homes.

In short:

If you want a blind that looks sleek, operates smoothly, and stays beautiful for years, Zipscreen is the clear choice.
